Syntagma Square is the main social and political hub of Athens, a place where history and modernity coexist under the imposing shadow of the parliament building. The square is named after the Constitution that Otto, the first King of Greece, was obliged to grant after a popular and military uprising on 3 September 1843. For decades, Syntagma was the backdrop for major political and historical events, a place that inspired change and hope. Today it is the starting point of most of the city's demonstrations and a venue for concerts and festivals. The square is always full of life, with so much to see and do around it.

See and do
Have a seat on one of the benches on the sides of the square — enjoy being under the trees or simply do some people watching. The square is always crowded and animated. Visit the Greek parliament for free and get a glimpse of how democracy functions in the country that invented democracy. Watch ceremonial changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which occurs every hour on the hour. Stroll through Greece's National Garden which, together with the Zappeion Hall Garden, includes 24 hectares full of rare kinds of flowers and other plants.
Eat
The lively area around Syntagma Square has any kind of cuisine you might be craving. Wander into the side streets below the square and you'll find everything from sushi bars to falafel joints. Nearby Petraki Street, for example, has a good wine bar, a cocktail bar, a bakery, a pastry shop and several reputable restaurants.
Party
Nightlife in the city center is buzzing with many Athens clubs found in the areas around the central Syntagma Square, such as Psiri, Plaka, Thission and Monastiraki, all close to metro stations. Other famous nightlife spots in the area are the music stages, called bouzoukia, with live music and celebrated Greek singers.
Shop
At the top of Syntagma Square is Ermou Street, a pedestrian street that is a shopper's paradise. It contains many of the big international names like Zara, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Benetton and Bershka. As you continue down Ermou Street you'll encounter Monastiraki Flea Market with its collection of clothing shops, antiques, used books, tourist shops, CD and vintage record stores, restaurants, cafes and ouzeries.
